BBQ Maintenance
Apr 13, 2016 Editor

BBQ maintenace is something you should do if you have not used your BBQ all winter. Hopefully you have been using your BBQ so your maintenance issues should not be too serious. But if not and you placed the BBQ in the garage or under the cover for the winter you should be thinking about unwrapping maintaining and rediscovering its use.

First thing is to remove the grills and heat medium so you can inspect the burner for any holes or blockage. Take your BBQ brush and run it over the holes of the burner to remove any blockage.Clean the inside of your firebox which is the lower body of your BBQ with a scraper removing any grease and dirt.

Next check under the burner where the ventury tubes and valve ports meet for any sign of spider webs. If you think that their could be a chance of spider webs take a ventury brush and place it up inside the tube until it meets the top of the burner and turn it to remove any webs.

Place your heat medium back in the BBQ and look over your grills, if they are cast iron check for any rust. Before using your BBQ you should season your cast iron grills. We recommend you use vegetable, olive, canola, sunflower oil or vegetable shortening. DO NOT use salted fat such as margarine or butter. They burn off at a really low heat and will not protect the grids.

Turn your BBQ on to medium high heat, wait ten minutes and turn off brush your oil on the grills making sure you cover the entire grill, and let cool.

The next item is your heat source meaning natural gas or propane, check all fittings for leaks using a soap and water mix. Place the solution on the joints of the fitting if you don't see any bubbles you are ready to cook, if you do see bubbles than tighten the fitting and retest.

Enjoy

Deicers – Ice Melters
Dec 26, 2015 Editor

Sand, salt, deicers, ice melters and volcanic ash will keep your family and friends from falling at your home this winter. Ice can easily hide under a light dusting of snow. Just because you don’t see the ice doesn’t mean it’s not there and waiting for unsuspecting footfalls.

Before a storm or freeze hits, stock up on sand, salt, deicers, ice melters or volcanic ash and keep your walkways and driveways free of ice and snow. Here are tips on when to use sand, salt, deicers, ice melters or even volcanic ash.

Sand

Applying sand to walkways that have lots of cracks is an affordable solution to using salt.  One of the drawbacks of sand is bringing it inside on shoes and boots and creating a messy floor.

If you have lots of cracks in your walkways, it is best to use sand.  Cracked walkways can result in salt melting ice and filling cracks with water.  When the water turns back to ice it can create larger cracks.

Winter Salt

When using Pollocks-Home-Hardware-Sifto-Saltrock salt make sure you clear your walkways before the temperature drops.  Winter salt only works well if temperatures are above -7 ੦ C  or 20 ੦ F.  At lower temperatures, sand and volcanic ash provide better traction but won’t remove the ice.

Deicers and Ice Melters

Ice Melters and deicers are top performing products that last and work at -31੦ C / -24 ੦ F.

Use deicers and ice melters when you have flagstone and interlocking stones, but no cracks. Deicers will not damage the finish on interlocking bricks and stones found in driveways and walkways.

If you apply ice melter on a frequent basis there will be run-off from the driveway or sidewalk which can cause harm to bordering lawns or vegetation. Ice melters should never be applied to first year concrete or applied to wood decks, brick sidewalks, patios or relatively new, non-wood decking material.

Natural Ice Melters

It is best to use melters and deicers that are natural and  fertilizer based.

Fertilizer based natural ice melters, such as Groundworks Natural Icemelter is pet safe, safe around children, safe on lawns and landscaping and safe on concrete.  When you shovel snow that has been applied with natural, fertilizer ice melt you are actually fertilizing your lawn and shrubs.

Volcanic Ash

An eco-friendly alternative to salt and deicers is EcoTraction made from volcanic ash.  EcoTraction delivers safety without damaging concrete and other infrastructure. It actually benefits lawns and gardens.  It has been proven to provide better traction than sand and is instant traction during a dangerous ice storm and freezing rain.  EcoTraction embeds itself into ice and snow for long-lasting traction and it has no working temperature limitations like winter salt, deicers or ice melts.

At all times remove the snow from your walkways and driveways.  If you are not removing snow,  then when the snow melts,  you end up with thicker ice.

Pollocks Home Hardware has the right sand, salt, deicers, ice melters or volcanic ash product to keep your family and guests from ice slips and falls during the Winter season.

Himalayan Salt Stones
Oct 7, 2015 Editor

The Himalayan Salt Stones are gourmet barbecue stones which let you salt, sear and grill your food with a salt stone on a grill. It is ideal for serving thinly slice meats, seafood, vegetables, pizzas or simply grilling a cheese sandwich.

You can use the Himalayan Salt Stone on any gas or charcoal grill. To avoid cracking the Himalayan Salt Stone you need to gradually preheat your salt brick for about a half hour before you sizzle, salt and sear your food. Place the Himalayan Salt Stone on the grill and then turn the burners beneath the salt stone to low. You may notice moisture accumulating at the edges. As the salt stone heats any moisture in the stone evaporates. The slower you heat the Salt Stone, the better. Fifteen minutes, later, turn the grill to medium. Ten minutes later, turn to high or to the desired cooking temperature.

It is very important to slowly heat your Himalayan Salt Stone and dry out all humidity or water present in the Salt Stone. This will prevent your Himalayan Salt Stone from cracking.
Once your Himalayan Salt Stone reaches a temperature of 400 degrees it’s time to cook your food at a smoking hot temperature. You can test the temperature of the Himalayan Salt Stone with an infrared thermometer. Upon placing your food on the Himalayan Salt Stone you should immediately hear it sizzle. This is how you know that your Himalayan Salt Stone has been heated to a high enough temperature. The hotter the salt block the more the food is seared and the less the juice it releases. It should only take about 8 minutes to cook a medium-rare, flank steak on a Himalayan Salt Stone.

A hot Himalayan salt block will season the food to perfection when used properly. If your food is too salty, it’s probably because your salt block wasn’t hot enough when you started. However, you can also reduce the influence of the salt by oiling the meat and fish lightly before placing on the salt block.

When you are done using your Himalayan Salt Stone, let it cool. This will take time a lot of time, maybe even until the next day. Be sure the Himalayan Salt Stone is fully cooled to room temperature before washing. Once cooled, simply scrub your Himalayan Salt Stone with a sponge or brush under a stream of water. The Himalayan Salt Stones are all-natural products that are naturally anti-bacterial, so you don’t need to use soap.

Dry your Himalayan Salt Block with a clean rag or paper towel. Clean rags do the best job, as they don’t get chewed up by the salt’s surface. When nicely dried, set on drying rack, or any place where it can air dry. Store your Himalayan Salt Stone in any location where humidity is at a minimum.

The Himalayan Salt Stone is a gourmet cooking stone and a fun barbecue experience when cooking outdoors in any season. Available at Home Hardware, the Himalayan Salt Stone is an original gift for any occasion, whether it’s Father’s Day, a birthday, a hostess or holiday gift.

Cooking demonstrations with Himalayan Salt Stones will be taking place, outside of Pollocks Home Hardware on Roncesvalles this Fall. Here’s a demonstration of a Pierogi Pizza being cooked on Himalayan Salt Stones at the Roncesvalles Polish Festival.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Apr 15, 2015 Editor

Carbon Monoxide or (CO) is an odourless, colourless gas produced by burning carbon based fuels. Common sources of Carbon Monoxide are vehicle exhaust, heating systems and generators. Household appliances such as your gas stove and dryer, kerosene heaters and BBQ,s when brought indoors.

When you breathe in carbon monoxide, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood to produce ‘carboxyhemoglobin’ (COHb), which reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen,” Health Canada says on its website

When carbon monoxide is introduced into the air you feel like you have the flu without the fever. You can feel a headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea all very subtle symptoms to a very dangerous and live threatening condition. People may end up with irreversible brain damage or death. Loved ones could die or have serious brain damage within as little as 10 minutes of being exposed to carbon monoxide. If you think that you have been affected by carbon monoxide poisoning immediately seek fresh air and medical attention.

To keep this dangerous gas from killing you and your loved ones have all fuel burning devices that are not rated for indoors outside, and maintaining your indoor fuel burning devices.  It is far to dangerous to bring your BBQ or gas generator indoors when a power failure happens. Secondly by simply installing and maintaining a Carbon Monoxide detector. A detector should be installed in front of all sleeping areas of your home. Detectors are available in both battery operated and direct connect to a power point. When you hear the detector going off immediately leave the building and call the fire department.

The provincial government in 2013 introduced the Hawkins Gignac act. They are a family of four who died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in 2008. This act makes the installation and maintenance of carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in all homes and apartments. A carbon monoxide detector must be installed outside all sleeping areas of our home. You have until April 15 2015 to comply.

The HEFT™ Ergonomic Auxiliary Handle
Jan 18, 2015 Editor

The HEFT™ is the fastest and easiest attaching ergonomic auxiliary handle for long shaft tools.

As seen on The Dragon’s Den, Marco Longley and his wife Anne are the inventors of The HEFT™.   A bicycle accident followed by back surgery led Marco on a quest to invent a solution for his health challenge when shoveling snow.  In 2008,  Marco turned his garage into a workshop,  learned how to weld and created lots of prototypes.  Through trial and error,  Marco’s  “aha” moment came with a suggestion from Anne and the patented locking collar was born.  In 2013 Dave Chilton of “the Wealthy Barber” and Dragon’s Den fame joined forces with Marco and Anne.

Use Your Snow Shovels with More Comfort & Power!

The first few times you use The HEFT™ , it will feel different.  The HEFT™ is specifically designed to ease your heavy lifting, not the “loading” of the shovel. Once the shovel is loaded, the magic of The HEFT™  happens – instead of bending over and grabbing the tool shaft near the blade to lift,  grasp the handle of The HEFT™.  You will notice immediately that you are almost 12 inches more upright – more comfortable and with far more “throwing power” than without The HEFT™ .

With The HEFT™, you are now more ergonomically positioned, using more of your much stronger leg muscles and less of your comparatively weak lower back muscles. For snow shovels and spades, the closer The HEFT™ is positioned to the load (the blade end) the better.

The HEFT™  is the fastest attaching and easiest to use auxiliary handle, making almost any long shaft tool more ergonomic – reducing pain, fatigue and potential injury.

Here are four incredible benefits why all homeowners need to own The HEFT™

Ergonomic

By attaching The HEFT™ to long shaft winter and garden tools like snow shovels, garden spades and rakes, the tool instantly becomes ergonomic due to the position of The HEFT™, which results in a more upright position of the user. Ergonomic tools are proven to reduce pain and fatigue as well as lessen the chance of serious injury to the user.

User Friendly

The HEFT™ has NO moving parts to pinch fingers; NO tools required for attachment; NO nuts, bolts, washers or screws to lose and it’s fast – attaching or detaching in just a few seconds. The HEFT™ takes up very little room and can easily be hung up in the garage along with other tools, making it one of the most versatile products available – one you’ll use year round.

Multi-Tool Application

The  HEFT™ moves rapidly from one long shaft tool to the next in seconds and is very easy to use. The HEFT™  works on most shaft diameters of 1 to 1.4 inches.  The 88 year old Mom of inventor Marco Longley uses HEFT™ on some of her hand-gardening tools because it extends her reach by 14 inches, without which she’d be unable to garden.

Cost Effective

By using The HEFT™ , consumers don’t need to spend big bucks replacing their old long shaft tools with brand new, expensive ergonomic shovels or rakes. Save the money and just twist on a The HEFT™ !

Why spend $100’s of dollars to buy new ergonomically correct tools? All you really need is The HEFT™  .  Available exclusively at Home Hardware stores across Canada.  At $19.97,  The HEFT™  is a great Christmas gift and a must for every homeowner.
